Amohela ho SpitskopDescription: A 310 hectare privately owned Country Reatreat in the Highlands of the Eastern Free State, with magnificent views over the Maluti Mountains.
Under rehabilitation from overgrazing, poaching and "old" farmland,
natural grasslands are being re-established, trees are being planted and gradually springbuck, black wildebeest, zebra and blesbuck will be returned to the land where they used once to roam in their thousands.
Stone built cottages blend and harmonise with the environment, and are furnished and decorated to bring you into the heart of Africa.
Each cottage comprises two superb bedrooms and two pampering bathrooms, in the open plan living area, a well equipped kitchen and charming lounge/dining area, with a huge open fire, big comfy couches and Weber braai on the covered deck.
Birding is excellent with those Free State "specials", chats and larks in abundance. Blue and white quilled korhaan are resident, secretary birds are a frequent sighting. Large flocks of water fowl, waders and the comical guinea fowl are seen daily on dams and in fields, and blue crane are a rare and stunning sighting.
The Northern side of the mountain will be retained as Dassie Nature Reserve, but climbs and hikes on the south side of the mountain are great fun.
Walking within the reserve is superb, watch for shy steenbuck, dassies (rock hydrax) sunning on rocks, black harriers cruising the veldt, and lovely waddling porcupines are a great night sighting.
Book for a sundowner drive with drinks and snacks in Fanny the restored 1975 Ford F250 with open seats on the back.
A deep quarry is to be converted into three deep dams...the first is complete and provides fun fly fishing for carp and black bass, the carp being especially elusive! Two trout dams are under construction.
Excellent fly fishing can be found in Lesotho, at Katse Dam and surrounding rivers.
Star gazing is amazing, with stars seeming so close you can touch them.
Cottages are self-catering, and fully serviced on a daily basis. Full English breakfasts are served at Dassie House, the beautifully restored and extended original sandstone farm house on the property.
Amohela is an easy 3 and a half hour drive from Gauteng, 1 and a half hours from Bloemfontein. There are 13 kilometres of gravel road.
This is the ultimate retreat for the discerning guest.
During the Cherry Festival a minimum of 3 days booking is recieced.
