Description: Rivendell Reserve in extent 1400 ha, lies cradled in a deep valley in the foothills of the Mpumalanga Drakensberg, below the Longtom Pass.
During the twenties to forties of the last century, this valley teemed with gold diggers as they sought and found this precious metal. Relics of gold claims and diggings are scattered along the valley.
A commercial trout farm is in production since 1989 and produces mainly trout for the catering market. Visits to the hatchery can be arranged on request.
Our valley, known as the Spekboom Valley, is in this mountain area, flanked by plateaus and vertical krantzes, with slopes and kloofs densely wooded with a rich verity of bird and indigenous plant life.
A cleared footpath along the river as well as the numerous internal roads on the reserve provides for scenic walks. Bundu bashing into the mountains is an option for the more adventurous and energetic.
The wild life that can be encountered are Kudu, Bush buck, Klipspringers, Duiker and Mountain Reedbuck. The Baboons and Vervet monkeys abounds in the vicinity but has never really become a problem. The bird life is prolific and numerous scarce migrants can often be spotted.
Accompanied Pony rides and longer supervised outrides into the valley and hills can be arranged on request.
The accommodation comprises of two houses, Bag End and Hobbiton, which are totally separate from each other, ensuring each party their own facilities and privacy.
Each comfortable house consists of four bedrooms, sleeping eight persons in total, built-in cupboards, en-suite toilets with a hand basin per bedroom and two full bathrooms serving the four bedrooms.
A spacious combined kitchen / dining room/ lounge with a cosy fireplace opens out on an elevated timber deck, with a "braai" overlooking the Spekboom river.
ESCOM provides electricity for the lighting, fridge, deep freeze, stove and hot water geysers.
The houses are fully furnished with bedding, towels, cutlery and crockery as well as fire wood. No T.V., radio or telephone will be found, but there is Vodacom cell phone reception in close-by spots and a land-line is available within 1 km. at one of the owner's residences.
A servant is in attendance to do normal household chores, cleaning up and making beds, but not for preparing meals.
The Spekboom River, with its origin high on the slopes of Mount Anderson, is a typical free stone river. The variety and moods of this Mountain stream will delight the serious flyfisher longing for a challenge.
Good May fly hatches and prolific insect life in and outside the water makes for excellent dry fly fishing, but nymphing techniques should always be considered when the fish hides deeper during bright conditions.
Stalking and wading is a must from autumn, through winter and especially during spring when the water becomes gin clear.
This stream holds a good population of wild self-spawning Rainbows, average size ranging from fingerlings up to maximum one pound and we also trickle stock with two to four pound Rainbows, Browns and "Spekboom Reds". These "Reds" originated from us and we are their custodians and we still, since January 1996, nurse the original brood stock, that accidentally came into South Africa with Danish rainbow trout ova.
The fishing is totally private and each house has its own exclusive 2,5-km beat of stream, with no dams. A bag limit of 2 fish per angler per stay is included in the accommodation rates and we encourage catch-and-release with barbless flies, to allow trophy fish to grow out.
Clay target shooting
Our challenging clay target shooting range, presenting 25 sporting clays, simulating game birds, will delight the serious and novice shot-gunner alike. Bring your own gun and ammunition or hire from us.
