Description:
Cranes Nest is situated at the foot of the Steenkampsberg within the Kwena Basin, where the Crocodile and Lunsklip Rivers feed the Kwena Dam.
"Kwena" is the Sotho name for crocodile and is adopted from the Crocodile River, which rises in these mountains and flows into the dam.
The farm is 400 hectares and south of Lydenburg and equidistant between Belfast and Lydenburg on the T2, Highlands Meander route. The area is predominantly highlands escarpment that separates the Highveld from the Lowveld.
We have a variety of accommodation to suit all requirements, namely an elegant 8 sleeper Cottage, luxurious 4 – 6 sleeper thatched Chalet and two unique Bush Chalets , designed for a couple but can accommodate a small family. See our Rates page for pricing.
Guinea Fowl Cottage - is an exceptional self-catering, self-contained unit that sleeps 8 people in 4 bedrooms, with two bathrooms. French doors in all the bedrooms, lead out onto patios where the vistas are something to behold. The living area, with a large fireplace, is open plan to a fully equipped kitchen. An undercover outdoor braai is included on the main verandah. Careful thought has gone into comfort and aesthetic value. This unit overlooks Damsel dam.
Eagle Owl Chalet – a delightfully thatched family unit ideal for four people but able to accommodate six. It is beautifully positioned overlooking the mountain and the stream audibly runs alongside it. Bird watching from this Chalet is a highlight. The sleeping arrangement is as follows: A private bedroom with a double bed; two single beds in the living area which partitions off most successfully into a second bedroom with its own cupboards. There are also two single sleepers in the loft, for the teenagers or young at heart. The kitchen is open plan and offers a microwave and a 2-plate gas cooker. The main bathroom includes a bath and shower, basin and toilet and the second bathroom comprises guest toilet and hand washbasin.
Bush Chalets – superior, self-contained "under canvas" units with bathroom on suite. The verandah has spectacular views. These beautifully appointed Chalets include all linen, towels, heaters, electric and normal blankets, tea/coffee facilities as also a fridge.

Our function/conference centre (DSTV equipped) is situated within one of our archaeological ruins and affords groups/companies a very special and unique experience. "MALAPENG" was named by the locals and the meaning is: “Place of the Many Walls”. We pride ourselves in being versatile and can arrange a function to suit your specific requirements. Our equipped kitchen lends itself to the catering. An ideal venue for a wedding with a difference!
Activities on property: fly fishing, bird watching. Nearby: river fly fishing, horse riding, hiking trails. By prior arrangement: clay pigeon shooting; archery; 4x4 trail.
Cranes Nest has 3 dams which are well stocked, on a regular basis, with rainbow trout. The Wilgekraalspruit, which runs through our farm, has numerous pools and providing the rainfall has been adequate, the river enthusiast is ensured of wonderful fishing. Fly fishing tuition can be arranged on request and by prior arrangement. The rod fee is inclusive of the accommodation rates. Fishing equipment to hire. Our streams are home to the rare Southern Kneria (Shell Eared) fish, found only in our area.
