Rustenburg (Afrikaans: Place of Rest) is a large town situated in at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range in North West Province. Just outside of the town are the two largest platinum mines in the world and the worlds largest platiunum refinery, PMR (Precious Metal Refiners), which processes around 70% of the worlds platinum.
Rustenburg was established in 1851 as an administrative centre for a fertile farming area producing citrus fruit, tobacco, groundnuts, sunflower seeds, maize, wheat and cattle.
14 km out of Rustenburg, the 3rd oldest town in the old Transvaal Province, is Boekenhoutfontein, former State President Paul Kruger's painstakingly restored homestead. A tour through this house will expose historical Afrikaner ambience that is as tangible as it is intriguing.
Rustenburg is also reported to be the fastest growing city in Africa.
